2012 NFL Draft: Breaking Down the San Francisco 49ers' Selection of A.J. Jenkins

Posted on 21:47 by belma malan
Jim Harbaugh and GM Trent Baalke were not kidding when they said they had one player in mind at the 30th overall pick in the NFL Draft.

No one was going to take A.J. Jenkins before the 30th overall pick on Thursday night.

Was it a reach to take Illinois wide receiver Jenkins with a first round pick?

Not if you ask the 49ers, who it sounds like had their sights set on him from the very beginning.

To sum up Jenkins' skills, not much is actually known about him other than he was predicted as a mid to late-second round draft choice.  He does have blazing fast speed -- he ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine -- and he is extremely bright, as he was named to the Academic All-Big 10 team.

There are also several knocks on him, one of which is the fact he does not show that 4.39-second speed on the field with the ball in his hands, which is very believable.

Baalke said other teams definitely had their sights set on him early in the second round, so they took the chance and snatched him up while they had the chance.  But they also passed up on higher-ranked wide receivers, such as Alshon Jeffrey, Stephen Hill and Rueben Randle.

However, he is the quintessential pick Harbaugh and Baalke were looking for.  A player with good character, smart and has speed -- exactly what the 49ers like in a football player.

I will say this -- no one should doubt Baalke or Harbaugh unless otherwise instructed to.  They have accumulated enough respect in the NFL Draft with their selection of Aldon Smith to save them for at least the next few years.

I will also say this -- the last time a Bay Area team reached for a speedy wide receiver in the draft was the Oakland Raiders with Darius Heyward-Bey in 2009.

Golden State Warriors: Taking A Look At Their 2012 Offseason Goals

Posted on 12:37 by belma malan
It has been quite a season for the Golden State Warriors.  Entering the 2011-12 season, they had a motivated owner in Joe Lacob, a young coach in Mark Jackson, talented assistant coaches and a moderately talented team on the court.

The 8th seed in the Western Conference playoffs was attainable.

Then how did we get to the Warriors possibly tanking the season to get a better pick in the NBA Draft?

The Warriors will have one of their biggest offseasons in some time, and it starts with the NBA Draft Lottery on May 30.

Health

Arguably the biggest goal of the 2012 offseason is getting the Warriors' starters healthy.

Golden State now has three of their best players headed for surgery on their ankles.  Andrew Bogut, Stephen Curry and David Lee will all have their ankles closely examined this offseason because they are essential to the any Warriors' success next season.

Having a big man like Bogut added to the team is one thing, but not having that supported by either Curry or Lee just puts the team back at square one once again.

2012 NBA Draft Lottery

There are two ways the Warriors can own a top-7 pick in the 2012 NBA Draft in June.  They can be awarded one of the top-7 picks via the 2012 NBA Draft Lottery in late-May, or they can trade for it.

For the first time in awhile, the NBA Draft Lottery will be exciting for Warriors fans if all goes according to plan.

However, the whole idea of tanking to get a top-7 selection is absurd.  The Warriors would be tanking for just a few more ping pong balls.  It is one thing to tank for a top-3 pick, but it another thing to tank for an undersized power forward like Jared Sullinger outside of the top-5.

Either way, the Warriors will be lucky to get any talent out of this whole ordeal.

Keeping the Assistant Coaches

The Warriors have one of the best group of assistant coaches the NBA has to offer, and assistant coach Mike Malone is at the top of it.  Of course, that also comes with a little competition in terms of keeping him around as a part of their staff.

Part of the deal of having Jackson come on as the head coach was to have one of the best assistant coaches in the game, Malone, as the assistant coach to almost help guide the first-year head coach.

There will be teams calling for Malone to become their head coach this offseason, and the Warriors would be wise to give him what he wants, as if they have not already.  He is the highest-paid assistant coach in the NBA this season.

NBA Free Agency

Free agency may not be very high on the Warriors' priority list this offseason, but it would bode well for them to pick up a few players to help solidify a nice bench going into next season.

With the Bogut acquisition, Lacob and new GM Bob Myers will not be going after a center anymore.  But they should look for a more stable option at small forward, as well as a power forward to play behind Lee.

A player like Kris Humphries or Boris Diaw could be a valuable pick-up this offseason.

San Francisco Giants: Aubrey Huff Placed on 15-Day DL With Anxiety

Posted on 15:42 by belma malan
Aubrey Huff will not be placed on the bereavement list, and there is no serious injuries or deaths in his family.  However, Huff was placed on the 15-day DL on Wednesday with anxiety disorder.

Giants' manager Bruce Bochy said Huff is back in Florida seeing a team-provided therapist, but will return to the team on Friday.  He will continue to receive treatment while back with the team.

San Francisco Giants: 'Personal Issue' Is Bad Timing For Aubrey Huff

Posted on 10:22 by belma malan
There seems to be no timetable for Aubrey Huff's return to the San Francisco Giants, but the absence from the team could not come at worse time and could end up costing Huff his job.

Huff has been away from the team after he took a flight to Florida on Monday morning to handle a "personal issue."

Bochy confirmed on Tuesday that the issue was in fact legitimate, after many perceived that Huff's absence from the team had something to do with one of his worst games in recent memory, which included an 0-for-4 day at the plate against the New York Mets and missed coverage on a double play that ended up costing the Giants the game.

Huff has since been away from the team, but Comcast SportsNet Bay Area's Andrew Baggarly reports that Bochy is sure that Huff's "personal issue" has nothing to do with his play on the field.

Told about widespread fan suspicion over the timing of Huff's departure, 48 hours after he had one of his worst games as a Giant and took a heavy dose of criticism for failing to cover second base in Saturday's loss at New York, Bochy said Huff's personal issue is absolutely legitimate.
That question has to be asked, though.  Huff has had a miserable season following a miserable 2010-11 season.  With two first basemen on the Giants' roster that are very capable of filling San Francisco's need both in the lineup and on the field, it was only fitting that the issue of Huff "going away for awhile" per team authority would come up.

For Huff, this absence from the team could not come at a worse time, as Brandon Belt and Brett Pill are breathing down his neck in terms of getting him out of the lineup for good this season.

The situation gives Pill the best chance at showcasing his skills without anyone in his rearview mirror.  We all know what the Giants' brass thinks of Belt and the mechanics of his swing, and Pill has been producing on a consistent basis when called into the lineup.

Pill is batting .353 with one homerun and three RBI in just 17 games played this season.

Huff was batting .182 before he left the team, and Belt has been nowhere near sturdy with his .241 batting average this season and the probability of him being sent down to AAA-Fresno when second baseman Freddy Sanchez returns from injury.

If Huff's role on this team was not already on the line, it sure is now, no matter what the "legitimate personal issue" is.

Baggarly is also reporting that Bochy plans to meet with GM Brian Sabean to discuss the situation, which can only mean that this issue may be bigger than it seems.  The bereavement list would appear to be in Huff's future, which only requires him to miss a minimum of three games (check) and a maximum of seven games.

The bereavement list is not an indefinite indication of where Huff is with this team or with the "personal issue," but it is telling of how satisfied the Giants are with replacing his at-bats during his time away from the team.

A player like Pill can win this first base job going away if he can produce in Huff's extended absence.

San Jose Sharks Season Wrap-Up: The Good, Bad and Ugly of 2011-12

Posted on 16:37 by belma malan

What do you say after a team with that much hype and that much talent fails to make a dent in the NHL playoffs?

Changes are coming in San Jose, and only a couple players are untouchable.

The 2011 offseason gave San Jose reason for hope, in terms of overcoming the hurdle that is the Western Conference Finals.
GM Doug Wilson traded scoring ability for speed and defense when he traded Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi for Brent Burns and Martin Havlat in two separate trades with the Minnesota Wild.
The Wild got a new hope for their team, especially early in the season when they were able to score at will while sitting at the top of the Western Conference for some time.
What the Sharks got was a failure to score goals, inept defense, miserable special teams and a giant headache.

NHL Playoffs 2012: Changing Up Lines Is Only Answer for San Jose Sharks

Posted on 09:47 by belma malan
The San Jose Sharks are just one game behind the St. Louis Blues in the best-of-seven series, but then why does it seem like the Sharks are in desperation mode and struggling to stay in this series?

San Jose has been outplayed in near every facet of the game since Game 1, and even in that game the Blues were the victor in three of the five periods that night in St. Louis.

But with the Sharks struggling to get even the smallest things going for them—especially in Game 3—the team now needs to change things up because the Blues have entirely figured them out, and Sharks coach Todd McLellan knows that.

San Jose Sharks vs. St. Louis Blues: What We've Learned in First 3 Games of 2-1 Series

Posted on 22:35 by belma malan
Through the first three games of the San Jose Sharks/St. Louis Blues series, two things are for certain -- the Blues' defense has a strangle-hold on the outcome of this series, and the Sharks will need several things to go their way to overcome that.

The Blues took a seemingly commanding 2-1 lead in the series by beating the Sharks in San Jose on Monday night.

It was the Sharks' worst-played game so far in the series and one that significantly showed who is the overall better team, as San Jose was unable to get the puck past both the St. Louis defense and Brian Elliott, which led to the Blues bullying the Sharks into a deep hole in the series.  It is also one that looks impossible to climb out of.

San Jose Sharks vs. St. Louis Blues: Sharks Still Have Advantage in 1-1 Series

Posted on 20:52 by belma malan
The San Jose Sharks were outplayed by the defensive-minded St. Louis Blues on Saturday night, but the Sharks still have the Blues right where they want them in terms of winning the overall series.

The Sharks were shut-out by the Blues, 3-0, after San Jose was unable to
come back from a St. Louis goal less than two minutes into the game, which Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic had inadvertently guided into his own net.

The series now heads to San Jose with the two teams tied at one game apiece.

However, the Sharks still have the Blues exactly where they want them.

San Jose Sharks vs. St. Louis Blues: What We Learned in Game 1 2OT Thriller

Posted on 23:11 by belma malan
Outplayed for nearly the entirety of the four periods leading up to the second overtime, the San Jose Sharks managed to steal a win in St. Louis, winning 3-2 on a Martin Havlat game-winning slap-shot on Thursday night.

The Sharks shook off a first overtime period in which they were aggressively outmatched by the Blues, who controlled the puck throughout the entirety of the third period, as well as the first overtime period.  St. Louis out-shot the Sharks 14-6 during that time, but were not able to find the back of the net.

However, the Sharks were, turning a game which seemed like they would inevitably lose into a win against a team that lost at home only six times in regulation during the regular season.

Here are five things we learned about the series heading into Game 2.

San Francisco Giants: Brandon Belt Demotion to AAA-Fresno Seems Imminent

Posted on 17:37 by belma malan
Two years ago, there was little doubt that Brandon Belt would become the San Francisco Giants' starting first baseman for years to come, as well as become part of a one-two combo in the middle of the lineup with Buster Posey.  Now with Belt struggling to hit from the plate and having his ball club constantly second-guessing him, the question is not when will Belt become the player we all thought he was, but if he has the talent to do so.

Belt was not in the Giants' starting lineup for the third straight game on Thursday when the Giants defeated the Colorado Rockies, 4-2.  He has gone one for 11 with five strikeouts to start the season.

It is not news to anyone that Belt will be sitting on the bench when facing left-handers this season, as manager Bruce Bochy said before the season that Brett Pill would be in the lineup when that occurs.  So seeing Belt sit against Rockies' left-hander Jamie Moyer was no surprise on Thursday.

However, players with this much hype surrounding them do not sit three games in a row, nor do they get off to one for 11 starts to the season.  Also, phenom-type players tend to get support from their own organization -- the Giants have done everything but that so far this season.

The latest public shot at Belt came on Tuesday when GM Brian Sabean said he would like to see a bit more consistency out of Belt going forward.
"Its not so much what the outcome is statistically, as much as the approach ... You want the quality at-bat, you want something that's put into play hard and with authority, or take your walk ... I think he's a little bit in between right now knowing he's made the ballclub, there is more confidence in him because we do feel he's ready, but you still have to perform to stay in the lineup."
The comment shows where the Giants are with Belt at this moment.  He has struggled at the plate since becoming the next young player everyone wants to see succeed for this ballclub, and seeing him struggle has taken its toll on every part of the Giants' front office.

They are simply tired of do-overs for Belt.  Bringing him up and down from AAA-Fresno to San Francisco was a mistake, but good players adjust to that, and Sabean seemed to voice that concern with his recent comment.

Something else may be taking its toll on the current confidence this team has with Belt, though. Hitting coach Hensley Meulens mentioned exactly what the Giants were keeping their eye on with before the season even started.
“The thing we continue to talk to him about is no matter how good his spring is going numbers wise, we want to see him have good mechanics,” Giants hitting coach Hensley Meulens told me. “We know how he was pitched last season and the things he struggled with. All we’re doing right now is make sure he’s prepared, if and when he’s back in the big leagues, he no longer goes through those struggles.”
If it is a public comment, you know it is a major issue in the Giants organization, and this was one of the first hints at the fact that San Francisco may not have as much faith in Belt becoming a Giants staple as we all thought.

So with those kind of comments paired with the fact that Belt has had a rough start to the season, going one for 11 with five strikeouts, it is fair to say that Belt's current stint in San Francisco may not be lasting long.  In fact, Belt's demotion to AAA-Fresno seems to be imminent, especially if everyone continues to hit except for him.

To make matters worse for Belt, who has had struggles with those exact mechanics at the plate that Meulens mentioned, Pill has been off to a great start to the season.  He has shown more aggressiveness and understanding at the plate in three at-bats this season than Belt has in all 11 of his at-bats.  Pill had a homerun in the Arizona series.

But Pill is not the future -- Belt is, or so we thought.

The Giants know what kind of players succeed in the MLB, and they know Belt does not have the bat to compete at this level at the moment.  Maybe sending him down to work on understanding that is what needs to be done.

We can still expect Belt to be playing in San Francisco for a little while longer, though.  But if he continues to struggle at the plate while every other player seems to be contributing in some way or another, we may be seeing Belt play in Fresno for a good portion of this season in order to work on those concerning mechanics.

The timetable for Belt and his bat would seem to be within the next month of the season, based on the recent comments, threat of starting him in AAA before the season and his recent struggles at the plate.

The Giants will give him his chances to succeed, but there is a point where he is becoming nothing but a distraction to a Giants team with more on their plate to worry about right now.

NHL Playoffs 2012: The Sharks Have More to Worry About Than Blues' Goalie Tandem

Posted on 09:43 by belma malan
The San Jose Sharks will be matched up against St. Louis Blues' goalie Jaroslav Halak when their first-round series gets underway on Thursday night in St. Louis. However, for the Sharks, it does not matter who suits up in net for the Blues — there are far bigger problems they must deal with first.

The Blues named Halak their starter for Game 1 after fellow goalie Brian Elliott left practice earlier this week with upper body pain. Up until then, it was not confirmed as to who would start the series between the pipes for St. Louis. The Elliott injury made it perfectly clear, though — Halak is the starter until further notice.

SJSU Safety Duke Ihenacho Hopes San Francisco 49ers Select Him in 2012 NFL Draft

Posted on 22:44 by belma malan
Former SJSU safety and recent graduate Duke Ihenacho will be at his mother’s house in Carson, Cailf. waiting for National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell to call his name during the 2012 NFL Draft on April 26 and begin the next chapter of his life.

“I’m so close, but I still have a lot of work to do,” Ihenacho said about his progression toward possibly playing in the NFL.

After an injury-plagued 2010 season, Ihenacho bounced back in 2011, becoming a key part of the SJSU defense that led the team to a 5-7 overall record — the most wins for the Spartans since the 2008-2009 season.

2012 NHL Playoffs: San Jose Sharks vs. St. Louis Blues Series Preview & Predictions

Posted on 23:33 by belma malan
After years of the San Jose Sharks entering the Stanley Cup Playoffs as a favorite, the Sharks now face the test of being the underdog in a series little expect them to win.

A season with so many ups-and-downs and twists-and-turns left San Jose in a struggle down the stretch of the season just to make the playoffs.  Jobs may or may not have been threatened, players' names may or may not have been thrown in the trade mill and the entire franchise may or may not be headed for reconstruction.

One thing is for sure -- the Sharks are in the playoffs with little to lose and everything to gain.  A playoff position they have not found themselves in for a long time.

San Jose Sharks: Hot Play Gives Them Perfect Chance to Make Run in NHL Playoffs

Posted on 00:17 by belma malan
Much like the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco Giants of 2010, or even the St. Louis Cardinals of 2011, the San Jose Sharks will be riding a high heading into the 2012 NHL Playoffs, giving themselves the perfect chance to make a run in the Western Conference.

Like those aforementioned teams, the Sharks are playing arguable the best hockey of their season at just the right time.  The win over the equally hot Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night only proved that this team is ready for the playoffs and succeed when there.

San Francisco Giants: Who's In and Who's Out of the Team's Opening Day Roster?

Posted on 10:51 by belma malan
For the first time in a while, the San Francisco Giants had trouble deciding who to start the season in San Francisco and who to send elsewhere.

A few notable names were wavering on the border of the Opening Day roster, but others seemed to be pure locks to start in the Orange and Black when the MLB starts its 2012 season.

Here are the final results for notable players who made or did not make the Giants Opening Day roster.

Brandon Belt—IN

All indications point to Belt starting at either first base or left field for the Giants on Opening Day, but the organization is still not happy with the progress in the mechanics of his swing.  He will start the season in San Francisco, but do not be surprised to see him make a stint or two in Fresno before the season concludes.

Gregor Blanco—IN

He was far too consistent in spring training for him not to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.  He will become the fourth outfielder once the season begins.

Joaquin Arias —OUT

For how well he played in spring training, Bruce Bochy may consider leaning toward Ryan Theriot becoming the backup utility infielder to start the season.  Arias is right on the cusp of the major leagues, so it will not take long to see him make his Giants debut in 2012.

Chris Stewart—OUT

It turns out Bochy did not go with a roster consisting of three catchers.  As expected if he chose to carry two catchers, Stewart was the odd man out, and he was dealt to the New York Yankees on Wednesday for right-hander George Kontos.

Eli Whiteside—OUT

Same deal here.  Whiteside's knowledge of the Giants pitching staff gave him a good chance of making the team's Opening Day roster.  However, that was not the case, as he was optioned to AAA-Fresno on Wednesday and the team went with Hector Sanchez as the backup catcher.

Brett Pill—IN

The surplus of first basemen is an issue Bochy must address quickly, as Belt, Aubrey Huff and Pill are all competing for two spots: first base and left field.

Since recent reports have Belt starting the season at first base, it was a moderate surprise to see Pill make the Opening Day roster for the Giants.  He will play first base and the outfield when certain situations call for it.

Hector Sanchez—IN

Even with the Giants carrying Stewart and Whiteside on the roster this far into the offseason, Sanchez became the man to backup Buster Posey on the Opening Day roster.

He had a terrific spring, so it was just a small surprise that we saw him make the Opening Day roster.  San Francisco had to make a decision about its catching situation for the future, and Sanchez is surely a part of that.

He is likely to get a good amount of time behind the dish this season, as Posey still looks to be needing days off to play first base at point this season.

Emmanuel Burriss—IN

The Giants did not have a choice here.

Freddy Sanchez will start the season on the DL with no timetable for his return, and Burriss has been one of the best players for the Giants in spring training.  We can expect him to be at second base for a good portion of this season.

San Jose Sharks: Ranking the Current Playoff Matchups the Sharks Could Encounter

Posted on 21:35 by belma malan
The San Jose Sharks helped their playoff cause on Tuesday with their win over the Dallas Stars on the road, but barring any terrible turn of events, it is now time to look forward to who San Jose would want to see in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.

As of right now, the Sharks will either own the third, seventh or eighth seeds in the Western Conference playoffs, which would match them up against either the first, second or sixth seeds, all of which pose scary situations for San Jose.

San Jose Sharks: Who Pays the Price If the Sharks Do Not Make the Playoffs?

Posted on 23:23 by belma malan
Whether or not the San Jose Sharks make the playoffs this season, things are about to drastically change in San Jose.

It has simply been a weird year for the franchise. GM Doug Wilson trades away scorers Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi in
pursuit of speed and defense, something that has been lacking in the team's previous playoff runs.
